The TROG Scientific Committee (TSC) has welcomed a new Chair-Elect and three new members from the fields of medical oncology and radiation oncology, to drive forward our mission to improve cancer outcomes by conducting world-class, practice-changing clinical trials.

The TSC, which is comprised of professionals from wide-ranging fields, plays a vital role in facilitating TROG’s work through discussion and endorsement of clinical trial concepts and proposals submitted by members, oversight of active trials and ensuring publication of trial results.

TSC Chair-Elect: A/Prof Sweet Ping Ng

We’re thrilled to welcome A/Prof Sweet Ping Ng as TSC Chair-Elect, after her appointment by the TROG Board of Directors following comprehensive review of the strong field of applicants.

Sweet Ping, who has held the role of TSC Deputy Chair since 2024, will continue to work closely with current TSC Chair, A/Prof Hien Le, over the coming months to ensure seamless transition to leadership of the committee when he completes his term as Chair in March 2027.

Sweet Ping is Director of Radiation Oncology Research and a Radiation Oncologist at Olivia Newton-John Cancer Research Institute at Austin Health in Melbourne, and holds appointments at Monash University, La Trobe University and the University of Melbourne.

She has worked on number TROG clinical trials and committees and was awarded TROG’s Emerging Clinical Researcher Award in 2025, in recognition of her outstanding scientific contribution at an institutional, national and international level since completing her primary qualify qualification eight years ago.

She has authored more than 90 peer-reviewed publications, gained US medical qualification to work as a Head & Neck and GI Radiation Oncology Fellow at the MD Anderson Cancer Centre in the US, and has contributed to multiple professional societies including TROG.

We would also like to welcome TROG Research Support Office Jessica Piotrowski as TSC Secretary, and three new TSC members, who describe their passion for cancer research below:

Dr Fiona Wang, TSC Discipline Representative – Medical Oncology

Fiona is a Medical Oncologist at Royal Perth Hospital in Western Australia. She completed her MBBS at UWA and medical oncology training in South Australia, becoming a Fellow of the RACP in 2024. After undertaking a Fellowship in Phase 1 trials at Guy’s Hospital in London, she returned to work in Perth.

What drives your interest and passion for cancer research?

“My interest in cancer research comes from witnessing the impact of cancer on patients and families in clinical practice. I’m motivated by the opportunity to improve outcomes through better evidence, more effective treatments, and reducing the burden of disease through patient-centred research.”

What attracted you to join the TSC?

“I’m not a Radiation Oncologist myself – but my husband is, and I hear him quote TROG studies all the time! When the opportunity came up to be part of the TSC, I couldn’t say no – I’m excited to take part in high-quality trial development, multidisciplinary collaboration, and ensuring research remains clinically relevant and impactful for patients.”

Dr Joseph (Joe) Sia, TSC Discipline Representative – Radiation Oncology

Joe is a Radiation Oncologist in the Neuro-Oncology Unit at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, Melbourne, and a Senior Clinical Research Fellow at WEHI in Victoria, Australia. He undertook his medical training in New Zealand and his radiation oncology training and laboratory-based PhD in Australia.

What drives your interest or your passion for cancer research?

“I am driven to provide better care for my patients and their caregivers, who are at a vulnerable stage in their lives. I also find cancer biology fascinating as a disease inherently arisen from ourselves, and the evolution of the cancer treatment landscape stimulating.”

What attracted you to join the TSC?

“I am passionate about promoting radiation therapy not only as effective, safe, and technologically advanced, but also uniquely able to complement other cancer therapies at a biological level. To this end I hope I can contribute by being involved in TSC.”

Dr Jeffrey Tuan Kit Loong (Jeff Tuan), TSC Discipline Representative – Radiation Oncology

Jeff is a Senior Consultant Radiation Oncologist and Research Director at the National Cancer Centre, Singapore and Clinical Associate Professor, Duke-NUS Medical School. His clinical and research focus encompasses proton beam therapy, SBRT, brachytherapy, and rectal spacer technology for urological and gynaecological cancers. He trained at the Royal Marsden Hospital, London, and the Italian National Hadron Therapy Centre, CNAO.

What drives your interest or your passion for cancer research?

“Radiation therapy has transformed in my career — from conventional fractionation to proton beam therapy and SBRT — and every advance has come from rigorous clinical research. Seeing patients benefit directly from evidence we helped generate is the most powerful motivator. I want to ensure that patients in Asia-Pacific have access to the best evidence-based treatments available globally.”

What attracted you to join the TSC?

“TROG’s mandate – ratifying trial participation, developing new protocols, and overseeing trial conduct across the region – is exactly where a Discipline Representative can add real value. As radiation oncology in South-East Asia rapidly adopts proton therapy, SBRT, and advanced brachytherapy, I hope to bring that regional perspective to the TSC and help shape a trial agenda relevant to our diverse patient populations.”
