23 October 2024:

TROG Cancer Research is thrilled to be among 14 clinical trial groups awarded new Cancer Australia funding with a combined total of almost $22.2 million to support vital work in improving cancer care and outcomes.

Minister for Health and Aged Care, the Hon Mark Butler MP, announced the successful applicants for the 2024-2027 Support for Cancer Clinical Trials (SCCT) program, which has total funding of $22.19 million over the next three years.

This funding will support 14 Multi-site Collaborative Cancer Clinical Trials Groups (CTGs) across the country, including TROG Cancer Research.

Mr Butler said the latest round of funding marked a significant milestone, as the Australian Cancer Plan will guide this round of the SCCT program.

The SCCT program is integral to delivering the Plan’s objectives, by ensuring targeted and innovative research investment, particularly in areas of unmet and emerging need, he said. The program will also focus on improving clinical trial design, enhancing equitable access to trials, and accelerating the translation of research into clinical practice, directly contributing to better outcomes for Australians affected by cancer.

“The $22.2 million investment in cancer clinical trials is a vital step toward saving lives and ensuring that all Australians, regardless of where they live, have access to the most advanced and effective treatments,” Mr Butler said.

“These trials are not just about research; they are about providing hope and delivering real, life-saving outcomes for people affected by cancer.”

TROG CEO Ms Susan Goode welcomed the funding, which will support TROG in achieving its mission of revolutionising cancer care through impactful radiation medicine research, to both cure cancer and improve quality of life.

“We thank Cancer Australia for their ongoing support of our important work. We look forward to continuing to facilitate groundbreaking clinical trials in alignment with Australian Cancer Plan, to improve radiation therapy options for the many cancer patients who can benefit from this treatment,” she said.
